I am excited that you are checking out this post. That either means you are new to the Dance Mom World (Welcome) and are wanting some tips on how to tackle it all. Or it means you are a seasoned dance mom looking for some new ideas.
I have 4 competitive dancers and have been a proud dance mom for 10 years. If you would have asked me back then if I would still be doing this 10 years later AND had this many kids in it I would have said never! But here we are. And if you know you know. Once your kid is in dance cutting back is basically never going to happen- HAHA!
After the many months of driving to practice, and the hundreds of times listening to the songs and watching your kid dance through your house eventually competition season arrives. For our studio we compete in 4 competitions usually over about 8 weeks between March-May. Once they start it just flies by and you are at the next one.
One of my earliest mistakes with my first dancer was not being prepared for how busy the day will be. And how much limited time there will be to eat for both you and your dancer. Dance competitions do have a lunch and dinner break most times, but you may be changing hair and costumes or running dances so they aren’t really eating breaks.
I am hoping I can help you with some ideas for snacks throughout the day.
Food Storage
As I mentioned I have 4 dancers so usually I do take way too much but I would rather have more than enough than not enough. A cooler on wheels has come in really handy to keep with you during the day- these two are great
options
I am also a big believer in the ‘snackle box’ for food as well. We usually fill up two and keep them with us for the day for quick snacks. They are the best!
A word of advice though- don’t put them in the dishwasher, the lid can get a bit distorted.
Protein
My kids are split into two groups, half would eat all day long and half hardly eat at all. So when they do eat
I really like to make sure I can give them something that is giving them energy for these long days. Our go to protein snack are:
- Meat Sticks
- Protein Bars: these have lots of flavor options or grab the kind you love https://amzn.to/46s1s6O
- Cheese Sticks
- Protein Shakes: these are great for moms because I find it hard to eat https://amzn.to/487KoUR
- Hard boiled eggs
- Peanut Butter Sandwiches ( my kids love the uncrustables, they are just super convenient)
- Turkey and Cheese rollups
Quick Bites to Eat
These days can go so fast. Often times my family we are getting hair and makeup started by 6am and not leaving until 9pm and sadly sometimes even later. Having some quick things that you and your dancer can grab while on the run is ideal.
- Apple sauce pouches (throw something over the costume though incase it spills)
- Trail Mix
- Prepackaged cookies
- Goldfish crackers
- Mini Eggs (we love these even not at Easter as they are a good snack and the shell prevents melted chocolate around)
- Banana Chips
- Snap Pea chips- these are one of our favorites, https://amzn.to/48E48zB
- Veggie Straw Chips
- Popcorn
- Cut up fruit
- Veggies with hummus
Drinks
We always make sure that we have packed plenty of water. Some of the competition venues offer areas to refill your water bottles but not always. We like to keep a few large jugs of water in our trunk so we always have some. Other drinks to help get through the day:

- Water with electrolytes
- Bottled Iced Lattes or Coffees
- Juice (I prefer the small bottles because I feel every time someone squeezes the boxes and the juice spills on a costume)
- Chocolate Milk
- Protein Shakes (as a dance mom sometimes this is the only ‘food’ I get in)
- Energy Drinks (for the adults)
- Water Flavor Enhancers
Remember that whatever you end up packing for your dance competition that you have enough to get through the whole day or weekend. It is much less expensive to pack your own food and most times it is healthier too. We usually grab a meal at the end of the night because we never have time to eat a full meal. Keep in mind your dancer might not want a full meal before they dance either.
