Planning a cruise is one of my most favorite things to do.  My family loves traveling, and we especially love cruising.  When planning a cruise you look at all of the ports that you will visit and all of the excursions that are available.  It is exciting to look into the places that you will visit and where you might enjoy visiting.  But what about those days that you aren’t visiting a port and you are having a ‘Sea day’.

Cruise ships are so big there is so much to do.  Below I will help you plan activities to enjoy while sailing on the sea.

Plan Your Day

All of the major cruise lines have apps for their passengers.  The apps are full of daily itineraries of all of the activities that the ship has to offer.  These won’t all be posted prior to your sail date so be sure you are looking at the app for events that  you and your family might enjoy.  Before your sail date be sure to check out all of the amenities that your ship has.  This will give you an idea of what you can check out during the sea days.

If you are interested in guided tours this might be a great time to use the app to see what is available to check out.

Onboard Activities

Some of the activities that the ship offers may be busier when all of the passengers are on the ship but it is still a great time to try things out.  During these days the pool will most definitely be busy so it is great to try out something out.   These are some of the can’t miss activities to try while sailing out in the ocean:

  • Rock Climbing (bring closed toe shoes and socks)
  • Zip Lining
  • Mini Golf
  • Basketball
  • Laser tag (bring closed toe shoes and socks)
  • Ice Skating

Find a Quiet View

One of our favorite things to do on a cruise is find that quiet spot to sit and enjoy some down time.  Our family has sailed on ships of all sizes and we have always been able to find a quiet area that was not too busy.  We love to find a spot overlooking the ocean to enjoy a coffee.  A lot of ships have chairs all around their walking tracks- and the walking tracks are not overly busy on the ships.

The front or the back of the ship have beautiful views and sitting areas on many of the decks.  Try and check out one of these views at sunrise or sunset.  In the mornings I have had great conversations with crew members during these quiet mornings.

Shopping

With all the hustle and bustle of stopping at ports and getting off the ship and back in time for dinner and the night life it is easy to miss out on the shops on board.  On Sea Days it is a great opportunity to take a look at the shops on board.  The merchandise is generally very unique and you can find really great cruise merchandise that you are unable to get onshore.

Be sure to use to cruise app to make sure that you aren’t missing any of the shops.  There will usually be a main area with all of the shops but there are also some hidden gems around the ship.

Duck Hiding

Our family loves hiding and finding ducks.  On Sea Days it gives you a great opportunity to do some serious duck hunting.  Throughout the rest of the cruise when you are running to dinner or to a show you might find ducks here and there as you go.  But on sea days when you

don’t have anywhere to be you can look in all the areas that you haven’t had the chance to check out.  Sometimes we will take the chance to go up and down the hallways on decks that our room isn’t on.  Guests will sometimes hide ducks in unique places in the hallways or around the stairs on decks you might not regularly visit.

Be sure to check out the loungers around the pool deck to see if anyone has left a duck out.  Remind your kids they can keep the duck themselves or re-hide them for someone else to find.

Remember that you are on vacation.  Take time on your sea days to have some down time.  Maybe even sleep in a little bit especially if you have been enjoying the night life.  For more family travel tips and ideas be sure to check out Blog – Together We Can Travel.
