Our family loves to travel and we do not shy away from traveling with our younger ones. Flying with a toddler can feel overwhelming, but these simple hacks from real mom experiences turn chaos into smooth skies. Pack smart, time it right, and keep them comfy—you can prevent or at least decrease those mid-flight meltdowns!
Book early or nap-time flights
The time of day that your flight is can really help with how your toddler is going to react. Depending on your destination you may not have much control on the flight times, but ideally a time that your toddler would normally be napping is ideal! Also- be sure that your toddler is not over tired- this can create a pretty stressful flight right off the hop.
Pack ear-popping treats
Your little one may not be able to tell you if their ears feel funny but just plan that they will. Grab toddler safe lollipops or chewy snacks. If your toddler still takes a pacifier then encourage them to use it. Also a sippy cup or a straw cup like this can really help https://amzn.to/4asiRP7. Hopefully your toddler will be like mine and not even notice the ear popping!
Window seat for distraction
Choosing a window seat can be an easy way to have a quick distraction. Your little one can look out the window if they are becoming restless. Alternatively they can also open and close the window cover.
Diaper bag snack station
Our go to for survival for just about anything is snacks! Grab a diaper bag like this one https://amzn.to/3L41idN and pack it full of your child’s favorite snacks. Grab one of these handy containers https://amzn.to/48ZVF8A that will keep them entertained while enjoying the snacks .
Double outfits + extras
You never know when you are going to need an extra pair of clothes. But in my experience I always need them when I don’t have it- so be sure to pack extra and put them in ziploc bags so the dirty clothes are contained.
Pre-board and burn energy
Be sure to arrive early so that you can get all of your items close to the gate. Don’t try and get your toddler to sit and relax keep them moving. Take them on a walk to burn all that energy.
Comfort items rule
Be sure not to pack all their favorite items in the checked bag. All of your little ones favorite stuffies and blankets need to be with you in the diaper bag.
