You may be just getting into the groove of summer but back to school season will be right around the corner.   If you aren’t prepared you will end up feeling rushed.  Back-to-school season hits differently when your kids are older. Gone are the days of themed lunchboxes and cute little pencil cases — now it’s all about the right backpack brand, tech gear, and clothes.  Shopping for tweens and teens can be a challenge, but with a little planning (and a lot of patience), it can be stress-free.

Clothes That Pass the Vibe Check

Older kids have opinions (if your kids are anything like mine)those opinions are  strong ones — about what they wear. Instead of guessing, involve them in the process:

  • Set a budget and let them make decisions within it. This teaches financial responsibility and avoids arguments.

  • Think in layers: Fall weather is unpredictable, and layering gives them style options.

  • Staples to grab: Neutral tees, hoodies, jeans, leggings, sneakers, and one “statement” piece they’re excited about.

Tip: If you aren’t already make sure you are on the mailing list for their favorite brands so that you know when the sales are coming and coupons will come your way!  Also try out thrift shops, your kids can find great clothes at a much lower cost.

Tech & Supplies That Make Sense

By middle and high school, kids may need more than just pencils and paper. Ask about:

  • School-issued devices: Do they get a Chromebook or iPad?

  • Supplies to buy: Notebooks, highlighters, pens, index cards, and binders (check your school’s supply list).

  • Extras they’ll appreciate: Blue light glasses, a wireless mouse, USB drive, or noise-canceling earbuds.  These are really popular earbuds for teens https://amzn.to/3VcSaoM

  • Deodorant (you’re welcome).

  • A new water bottle or lunch container.  My teen loves this water bottle https://amzn.to/45YqKcy

  • Personal hygiene kit for their backpack (hand sanitizer, lip balm, period supplies if needed).

  • Locker gear: Mirror, magnetic organizers, hooks.

  • School ID lanyard or phone case with card holder

Added tip!  Have you teen be a part of the budgeting, if they have to put up part of the money for their new items it will help them understand the budgeting process.  They will learn that the sky is certainly not the limit!

Though any shopping trip with your teen can be a challenge, with a little careful planning you can both be excited for the new school year.
